Press Release

Asyst's Next-Generation Velocity™ Automation System Selected by Large Japanese Memory Manufacturer

FREMONT, Calif., July 16, 2007 -- Asyst Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq GM: ASYT) today announced that its next-generation Velocity™ HTC (High-Throughput Conveyor) automation system has been selected by a large Japanese memory manufacturer for installation at its newest fab. This represents the first commercial installation of the Velocity HTC, following trials of Asyst’s earlier generation conveyor systems at fabs in Singapore and Texas.
For this customer, the Velocity HTC will serve a vital role in high-volume transportation of wafers between adjacent facilities, allowing the customer to utilize unique tool sets and capacity at either facility, which greatly increases total effective throughput and tool utilization, as well as overall manufacturing flexibility. The next-generation system also is expected to be used in other high-volume applications within the customer’s newest fab.
“As the market share leader in semiconductor AMHS, Asyst has daily responsibility for the safe and efficient management of approximately half of all 300mm chip production worldwide,” said Hitoshi Kawano, senior vice president and co-leader of Asyst’s automation solutions group (ASG). “Asyst also has been a leader in conveyor development and commercialization for many years. Through this combined experience, we have a unique understanding of the ongoing production requirements in high-volume fabs, and have leveraged this experience in every aspect of Velocity’s development and commercial deployment.”
“One of the keys to the success of Velocity is our ability to seamlessly integrate its very high performance with our other production-proven vehicle-based AMHS, and thus provide to the customer a total automation system that is capable of both high volume and high reliability,” said Paula LuPriore, senior vice president and co-leader of ASG. “We believe that this production- and volume-ready capability is a critical component of the agile fab of the future.”
Asyst is demonstrating the Velocity HTC in its booth #1342 at Semicon West 2007, being held July 16-20 at the Moscone Center in San Francisco.
